M3U vs Xtream Codes: Which IPTV Format Should You Use?

Tutorial June 6, 2026 · 5 min read

If you're new to IPTV, you've probably seen two options for connecting your player app: M3U URL and Xtream Codes API. Both do the same job — they load your channel list into IPTV Smarters Pro — but they work differently. Here's what you need to know.

What Is M3U?

M3U is a plain-text playlist format that lists channel names and their streaming URLs. It's been around for decades and is the most widely supported format across all IPTV players.

What Is Xtream Codes?

Xtream Codes is a modern API-based system. Instead of a static file, your IPTV player connects directly to your provider's server to fetch channels, categories, EPG (Electronic Program Guide), and VOD (Video on Demand) content.

Side-by-Side Comparison

✅ Xtream Codes

  • Real-time channel updates
  • Built-in EPG support
  • VOD & Series included
  • Loads faster (categorized)
  • More secure (private API)
  • Not supported by all apps

📄 M3U URL

  • Static playlist (manual refresh)
  • Separate EPG URL needed
  • No VOD categorization
  • Slower with large playlists
  • Link can be shared / leaked
  • Works on any IPTV player
Verdict: If your IPTV provider supports Xtream Codes, use it. It's faster, more feature-rich, and requires less manual setup. Go with M3U only if you need compatibility with apps that don't support Xtream Codes.

How to Use Each in IPTV Smarters Pro

Xtream Codes Setup

  1. Open IPTV Smarters Pro and tap Add New User.
  2. Select Xtream Codes API.
  3. Enter the Server URL, Username, and Password from your provider.
  4. Tap Login — all categories, channels, VOD, and EPG load automatically.

M3U URL Setup

  1. Open IPTV Smarters Pro and tap Add New User.
  2. Select M3U URL.
  3. Paste your full M3U playlist URL.
  4. If your provider gave you a separate EPG URL, tap "Add EPG" and paste it.
  5. Tap Login to load your channels.
Pro tip: On IPTV Smarters Pro you can add multiple users. Use Xtream Codes for your main provider and M3U for a backup playlist if needed.
